Lublin Hydrogen Upland: Partnership for Green Energy

The City of Lublin, the Road and Public Transport Authority, the Municipal Transport Company (MPK Lublin), and Lublin University of Technology have signed a letter of intent to establish the Lublin Hydrogen Upland This new initiative will focus on the practical application of scientific research and technological expertise related to hydrogen. The signing ceremony took place today (June 10) during the Transport Cross-Border Cooperation Forum.

“Today’s event is not only an opportunity to exchange experiences but also a tangible step toward building a future based on environmentally friendly technologies. The signing of the letter of intent to establish the Lublin Hydrogen Upland is a symbol of these efforts. I believe this innovative initiative has the potential to become one of the key hydrogen technology hubs in Eastern Poland, supporting the local economy and enhancing the region’s innovation potential,” says Tomasz Fulara, Deputy Mayor of Lublin for Investment and Development.

The Mission of the Lublin Hydrogen Plateau

The Lublin Hydrogen Plateau will focus on developing practical applications of hydrogen as an eco-friendly energy carrier. Thanks to the involvement of universities, there will be a strong emphasis on knowledge transfer between academia and industry. A particular focus will be placed on using hydrogen in public transport—both in fueling public transport vehicles and in creating the necessary infrastructure, such as hydrogen refueling stations and energy storage systems.

“Knowledge transfer from universities to the economy is essential for the development of new technologies. We have already successfully completed several large projects, including the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell-powered buses and infrastructure for hydrogen storage and distribution. Now, we are working on another major initiative—creating an integrated system where energy storage, carports, and charging stations work together to provide a sustainable and reliable power supply. This is a great example of how universities can directly address industry needs,”
says Professor Zbigniew Pater, Rector of Lublin University of Technology.

Sustainable Public Transport Development

During the Transport Cross-Border Cooperation Forum, international experts engaged in discussions on the key challenges and innovative solutions for the future of public transport. Representatives from Poland, Moldova, Ukraine, and Lithuania shared their experiences on topics such as sustainable mobility, modern technologies, the integration of various transport modes, and best practices in urban transport management.

“We are committed to making public transport in Lublin not only efficient and accessible but also environmentally friendly. The Lublin Hydrogen Plateau presents an opportunity for even closer collaboration between academia and industry and will support the implementation of innovative solutions in our daily public transport operations. We firmly believe that hydrogen technologies are a key element of modern mobility,”
says Grzegorz Malec, Director of the Road and Public Transport Authority in Lublin.

Lublin is Advancing Hydrogen Technologies

As part of the Forum, international guests also participated in study visits, which included:

  • A hydrogen bus demonstration

  • Presentations of electric charging infrastructure

  • Modern passenger information systems

  • A state-of-the-art transfer hub

  • Visits to municipal traffic management units

“The future of public transport lies in hydrogen technology, which combines environmental sustainability with practical functionality. Lublin already has tangible experience in this area—four hydrogen buses are currently operating on our streets, and another twenty will join the fleet next year. By joining the Lublin Hydrogen Upland , we want to both share our expertise and gain new knowledge to continuously develop our low-emission transport policy,”
says Bogdan Kołciuk, President of the Municipal Transport Company (MPK Lublin).
